Lonely London Lad: Self-Wiki

[Ed. note: Wikipedia has a noteworthiness criteria for bands that they must be signed to a major indie or mainstream label. Since we do everything ourselves anyway, in proper Lonely tradition, I'm just going to write my own wiki. I have taken pains to remain factual.]

Lonely London Lad ("LLL") is an Anglo-American rock band, formed in late 2007.

The band is known for its trippy sounds, quirky lyrics and acrobatic vocals, creative note choices and timing, home-made music videos, and psychedelic album covers and t-shirt.

The group has recorded two albums on the Lonely London Lad Records label, the eponymous double-CD debut in August, 2009; and "Foaming At The Mouth", released January 11, 2010.

Between the two albums, LLL released three hours and twenty four minutes of studio material within a six-month period.

Early History

LLL formed in December of 2007 when American Robert Savage, a self-described "throwback from 1611", woke up with a song in his head and decided to produce it. Together with Erik Haddad, a Chicago-based composer, he produced 25 songs over the next four months. The very first song, "Paper Lilies", was a "Song of the Day" on YouTube, and developed a cult following for its Shakespearean lyrics and haunting sound.

Debut Album

In the Spring of 2008, Savage bumped into Johnny rK, a Los Angeles based composer and session guitarist. The two worked back and forth on the track for weeks on "Buffalo Jump", creating what remains one of LLL's best-known songs.

The two then set out to create a full-length album, and produced 25 songs together over the next 9 months, including "Dark Gardens", "SPQR", and the 12-minute epic "Another Planet".

At this point, Savage sold a private archipelago he owned in Nova Scotia to The Nature Conservancy to finance the band, and converted his 15-year-old Vermont corporation into a record label, Lonely London Lad Records, Inc.

During this time, Savage also co-wrote and produced songs with other musicians, including Lee Spreadbury in Leicester, England ("Toi"); and Billy Fuller, in Bristol, England, with whom he created "Dick And Jane", "Drop Dead Lizzie", and "Macbeth", each of which would be featured on the debut album.

Twenty-five tracks were included on the double-CD debut, released in August, 2009.

"Foaming At The Mouth"

LLL's second album is "Foaming At The Mouth", released on January 11, 2010 (1/11 as in "LLL"). The CD contains 13 new songs, written and produced by Savage and Fuller, the latter who plays electric bass, double bass, guitars, drums and percussion, piano and keyboards, and analogue synths on the tracks.

"Foaming" is characterized by the driving beats and pop noir sensibility that informed "Drop Dead Lizzie", "Dick And Jane", and "Macbeth",the Savage/Fuller collaborations from the first album, along with multi-track harmonies.

Style

LLL's style is a strange blend of unlikely genres and time periods. "Dark Gardens", for instance, combines a house beat, guitar shredding, choral voices, and spoken word. "Dick And Jane" combines dirty electric bass with violin and a triphop beat, sitting snugly under a Johnny Rotteneque vocal. "Toi" uses Rhodes and Hammond organs and malleted drums to recreate a psychedelic Paris of the mid-1960s. "Drop Dead Lizzie" features a solo on a double bass, bowed. "Victor Richter" is a slice of manic pop, a genre which has few if any comparative examples.

Because of the diversity and juxtaposition of so many different styles and influences, done with artful intent, "experimental art rock" may be the best catch-all.

Artwork

On January 1, 2010, LLL put large (58" x 58") art prints of the first two LLL album covers up for sale, as well as a 5-panel print of the complete folder from "Foaming At The Mouth", measuring 24 feet long by 4' 10" high.

iTunes et al

Savage is a vocal critic of iTunes and similar services for what he believes to be their unfair treatment of musicians and for their "strip-mining of the musical landscape". He is also an advocate of Fair Trade pricing for music, and opposes unfair trade practices such as dumping and predatory pricing in the music industry.

MySpace

LLL's primary fan base is on MySpace. Savage actively hand-picks prospective fans, realizing that without this outreach effort, most of those who become LLL fans would not otherwise hear of the band. He also writes occasional articles intended to help fellow musicians, such as this one on tips for succeeding on MySpace.
